Leafs Make Trade with Sharks
Late last night, the Leafs made a quick trade with San Jose, sending Ryan Reaves to the Sharks in exchange for defenseman Henry Thrun. Last season, Reaves appeared in 35 games, recording just 2 assists before being sent down to the Marlies, where he scored one goal in three games.
In return, the Leafs receive left-handed defenseman Henry Thrun, who appeared in 60 games and collected 12 points (2 goals, 10 assists). This is a solid little trade for the Leafs, as they save money by moving the final year of Reaves' $1.35 million salary, while Thrun will earn $1 million before becoming a restricted free agent.
In typical fashion—because it’s the Leafs—the narrative surrounding the trade is that Thrun won’t work out in Toronto. Some scouting reports suggest he struggled with heavier minutes, averaging 15 minutes of five-on-five ice time per game. Perhaps it's simply a matter of inexperience; after all, he’s only 24 years old.
Thrun is expected to come into camp and compete with Philip Myers for Simon Benoit’s spot on the roster. However, it’s more likely he’ll play regularly with the Toronto Marlies and be available for a call-up if needed.
