Vegas Tampering for Marner?
So, this Marner-to-Vegas situation just took a turn.
Multiple reports yesterday stated that Toronto and Vegas were discussing a sign-and-trade involving Marner, with him signing for four years at $12 million per season. However, according to Elliott Friedman on 32 Thoughts, it turns out that during the draft combine, Vegas approached Toronto and said, “If Marner’s rights were available, we’re interested.”
This could potentially be considered tampering because Vegas inquired specifically about Marner’s signing rights—rights that were not officially made available. The loophole around this, of course, is a sign-and-trade, which is exactly what the Leafs are now trying to negotiate.
It can also be seen as tampering because there was communication between clubs before the July 1st opening of free agency, and not with the player’s representation, as is only allowed once free agency begins.
Now, if the Leafs and Vegas fail to reach an agreement and Marner ends up signing with Vegas at any point this summer, Toronto could pursue tampering charges. And IF—knowing the NHL, it's a massive if—Vegas is actually found guilty, the penalty would be significant.
According to NHL rules, if a team is guilty of tampering, the consequences may include:
-
A fine of up to $5 million
-
Termination of the signed contract
-
Forfeiture of draft picks or cash to the tampered club
Why am I suddenly hearing the words “like sand through the hourglass” in my head?
