Jays Trade for Myles Straw :Update Sasaki signs with the Dodgers

This will be a quick write-up, but the Blue Jays have announced that they have acquired outfielder Myles Straw from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for future considerations. Straw spent most of last season in Triple-A with the Columbus Clippers. In 123 games, he collected 108 hits and hit 8 home runs. While he isn’t known for his power, he’s highly regarded for his defence. In 2022, Straw won a Gold Glove, which underscores his defensive value. The defence has been a key focus for Ross Atkins this offseason, and after adding a Gold Glove infielder earlier, bolstering the outfield with another Gold Glove winner is certainly a positive move.
As part of this trade, the Blue Jays are also reportedly receiving $2 million for their international prospect pool, bringing their total to approximately $10 million. This detail is significant because multiple reports are suggesting that the Toronto Blue Jays are finalists for Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki. Unsurprisingly, the LA Dodgers are also in the mix. While Jays fans have seen the team fall short in these situations before, signing Roki Sasaki would be a fantastic addition to the rotation.
Last season with the Chiba Lotte Marines, Sasaki posted a 10-5 record with a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts. Known for his blazing fastball, he consistently hits 100 MPH on the radar gun.
If the Jays somehow manage to land Sasaki, it would significantly strengthen their starting rotation. Additionally, it could benefit the bullpen, as Yariel Rodriguez could shift to a relief role, which might better suit the team’s overall needs.
We’ll see what happens. Thanks for reading!
