Welcome Back Yimmi Garcia (Jays fall and pick 8th in the First Round)
The Toronto Blue Jays have finally made a signing during the winter meetings. The team announced that they have reunited with pitcher Yimi García. Yimi split last season between Toronto and Seattle, and for the Jays, he was the lone bright spot in the team’s struggling bullpen.
Last season, in 29 appearances, García pitched 30 innings, achieving an impressive 2.70 ERA. The previous year, he battled injuries while with the Jays before being traded to Seattle at the deadline. Unfortunately, his injury troubles continued in Seattle, where he was shut down after suffering an elbow injury. Fans will likely be pleased with this signing, as García was consistently reliable out of the bullpen during his two-and-a-half seasons in Toronto.
Ross Atkins chose not to pay closer Jordan Romano a $7.5 million salary for the coming season, citing concerns over the health of Romano’s arm. However, the Jays opted to pay Yimi García $7.5 million over two seasons, despite him coming off a similar injury. Don’t get me wrong—I’m glad García is back, but this decision is just one of the many head-scratchers Atkins has made. After nine seasons, we fans have come to expect some bizarre decisions.
Bringing García back to Toronto addresses one of the many questions surrounding the team’s bullpen. Now, we wait to see what’s next for the Toronto Blue Jays. Could it be a potential reunion with Teoscar Hernández? Or perhaps signing Corbin Burnes to strengthen the starting rotation? Time will tell.
Additionally, tonight marks the MLB draft lottery. Toronto has a 7.5% chance of landing the first overall pick. They are most likely to select fifth overall, which aligns with expectations. Stay tuned for updates—this blog will be refreshed once the Jays’ draft position is announced.
Thanks, as always, for reading!
